>> Glycerol monolaurate (Monolaurin)

Monolaurin (abbreviated GML; also called glycerol monolaurate, glyceryl laurate, and 1-lauroyl-glycerol) is a monoglyceride. It is the mono-ester formed from glycerol and lauric acid. Lauric acid is a fatty acid while glycerol is the main component of a triglyceride. It is a multi-functional ingredient, works as a co-emulsifier (helps water and oil to mix together next to other emulsifiers), anti-microbial agent (preservative booster), emollient and anti-inflammatory agent (makes skin nice and smooth). As a food additive, it used as emulsifier and  preservative. It also has some thickening and refatting properties in cleansing formulas.

It is a compound that occurs naturally in some plants. Tests on a compound found in human breast milk finds glycerol monolaurate capable of eliminating disease-causing bacteria from the host while allowing beneficial bacteria to thrive. Human milk contains approximately 3000 µg/ml of Monolaurin, compared to 150 µg/ml in bovine milk and none in infant formula. Monolaurin holds great promise as a potential additive to cows' milk and infant formula that could promote the health of babies around the world. Glycerol monolaurate is also taken as a dietary supplement.

Monolaurin is a Medium chain fatty acids(MCFAs) can promote animal health and improve growth performance. Glycerol monolaurate in medium-chain fatty acids has been shown to be superior to antibiotics in fighting bacteria and viruses because it is more beneficial to animal health. In Animal Feed & Nutrition it is used to promote and stabilise gut health by inhibiting gram(+) and gram(-) baterial, effective regardless of pH.

The founctions of monolaurin in animal health and nutrition include antimicrobial effect, help to reduces intestinal inflammation, improve feed palatability, and as a result, to promote digestion and absorption and improve growth performance.

Monolaurin is most commonly used as a surfactant in cosmetics, such as deodorants. It is a lipophilic non-ionic surfactant, and can be added to cosmetics as an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent. It is used in personal care products as a surfactant in order to create natural lather and an emulsifier. It acts as a lubricant or an emollient on the skin surface, which gives the skin a soft and smooth appearance. We use it to hold solid stick deodorant formula together.

Monolaurin is sold as a dietary supplement and as an ingredient in certain foods. It is categorized in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).

It was proved that it has good antiviral properties against enveloped viruses (African swine fever ASF, blue ear disease PRRSV, swine fever, avian influenza, pseudorabies, etc.), and it is resistant to a variety of bacteria in the feed (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, yeast , Aspergillus niger, Penicillium glaucum) have obvious inhibitory effect.
